This is Pepper's 3rd kit of bunnies.
We bred her in July the first time, to see if she was mother material. I know they give birth pretty much exactly 30 days after they are bred. I kept watching for her to make a nest and pull her hair out, but she never did and I was starting to think she didn't take. Finally, on day 30 I went out to feed the horses and their were baby bunnies all over the cage. They were super cold and Pepper seemed as surprised as we were! She was completely clueless, but she didn't kill them as some bunny moms do. We brought her in and held her on her back and put the babies on her as soon as one latched on pepper started licking Reagan's hand and she decided that being a mom wasn't so bad. After that, she took to nursing her babies like a champ.
The second batch we bred for Christmas bunnies. This time I knew she was getting the hang of it because she ran around like mad the evening before giving birth. She raced around her cage with straw in her mouth, frantic to make the perfect nest. It was cold out, so we brought her and the cage in, and she had her babies in our kitchen in the wee hours of the morning. She did a great job being a mom, besides accidentally stepping on one of the babies and killing it. Sad, but a good lesson in life for the kids. Life and death is actually real and they see it first hand.
This batch we bred for Easter bunnies. They will all be big enough to go to their new homes Easter day. Having the babies around is such a blast. They really become amazing pets, too. The neighborhood girls come over every day and handle them. The entire 6 weeks of their little lives they are handled nearly all day long. Reagan from morning until bed time is holding a baby. They become just like a pet dog! One of our neighbors has one from the last batch, her name is crème brulé... The girls named it and our neighbor kept it. That bunny is an attention hog and I really can't believe how personable it is!
So here we are again! Waiting for the babies to arrive! Can't wait to see what colors she has and how many. Hopefully they will be here tomorrow!!
